The tongue is a very important organ of the human body. The Prophet once observed a Muslim speaking in a carefree manner. The Prophet said to him: Save yourself from your tongue. He asked: Do we have to protect ourselves even from our tongues? The Prophet replied: إِلَّا حَصَائِدُ أَلْسِنَتِهِمْ   (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2616)

It is what your tongue has sown which will take you to Hell.  What is the meaning of what your tongue has sown? This doesn’t mean positive remarks, rather it means the negative remarks we make. You have to be cautious when it comes to using your tongue. You shouldn’t speak unmindfully on any matter. For example, you may say so and so person is a liar, corrupt or an exploiter. For example, when I go to Hindu gatherings, Muslims spread propaganda about me. They say I am pro-Hindu and anti-Muslim. Nobody investigates the matter to know what I do in those gatherings. I go there to speak about Islam.

This is an age of free enquiry. People are curious to know about things. People also want to know about Islam. Be it Hindu or Christian, people want to know about Islam. I go to gatherings to speak about Islam in simple terms. If I were asked  why I go to people's gatherings, I would say I go to introduce Islam. But some Muslims neither investigate the matter nor do they ask me about it. They start accusing me and say I go to Hindu gatherings because I am pro-Hindu and anti-Muslim. This is a guess. If you guess and speak, you must think a lot about whether your remark is negative or positive. Every person has the right to say good things about others. There is no accountability in this matter.

If you say that a person is truthful, you will not be accountable. If you have to give a positive report about someone, you will not be accountable in this world or in the Hereafter. But if you give a negative remark about someone, you should think a thousand times. You should ask yourself: Should I say this or not?
